Prefects

What are prefects?

Prefects are children in year 6, who are responsible for others while the teachers are not present. They also help teachers keep the school in order (but that doesn't mean that other pupils can't help as well). These children are chosen by all the teachers in the school, to ensure that they are sensible; and reliable. But teachers change who the prefects are to make it fair for the other pupils who want to help.

Are there any other similar responsibilities?

We also have head girl and head boy, who are in charge of the prefects, and show new prefects what they need to do. These children do not change as prefects do.

Why can't children pick who prefects are?

Prefects are chosen by teachers to ensure they are sensible and reliable, whereas children may choose pupils because of popularity.

Is there anything else that I might want to know?

  • Prefects wear badges to show people who they are.

  • If prefects are caught behaving badly, there badge will be confiscated, and given to another pupil.

  • Prefects have a special book. It is where the names of pupils who have been naughty are written down.
